My 3 year old female Chow was spayed on Wednesday. When I picked her up
from the vet, he said that a normal uterus is pink in color but that hers
was dark and looked "hemorrhagic". He offered to send a tissue sample for a
pathology test if I wanted.
I'm wondering what this color change might indicate and is it worth the
additional $150. to find out.
Prior to the surgery she had not shown any obvious symptoms of pyometria,
but one of the males was sniffing her back end. Blood work was all normal.
Thanks for your comments,
Margaret

If there's tissue a doctor (human/veterinary/etc.) thinks looks
abnormal, then it's a good idea to get the biopsy. If you can't afford
it, then you can roll the dice and bet that the tissue from a youngish
dog without any clinical signs of genitourinary disease is not a severe
problem. If you can afford the biopsy, then it's a small price to pay
for peace of mind. What if it IS something that needs to be addresses
medically or surgically? It'd be much better to know before your pup is
sick.
As a professor of mine used to say, "If it's worth removing, it's worth
getting a biopsy."
