What do you think he's looking for?

My dog, Erwin has nasty arthritic changes in one elbow, and a swollen joint
capsule on his right hind, possibly a damaged cruciate.

The vet who is seeing him has suggested that we take an X-Ray of his hips.
Any idea what he might be looking for? We're doing it regardless, and I'm
sure I'll find out anyways, just looking for a sneak peak.

The thing that he said was unusual was that he shows pain on hyperextension,
but he isn't too bad on hyperflexing it.

Thoughts?

Your vet is possibly looking to see if Erwin has any degenerative changes in
his hips since he has problems in multiple other joints.  If he has severe
arthritis or hip dysplasia, that may affect his recommendation for cruciate
surgery on his right stifle.  For instance, the TPLO surgery has a faster
recovery time with usage of the operated leg so there would be less
prolonged stress on the other hind leg.  This would be the preferred surgery
for a dysplastic dog, rather than the conventional "over the top" procedure.
I hope this helps.  It would be best to ask your vet what he is looking for
rather than have someone else second-guess him.

Don't worry, I will ask (not trying to second guess him either, I trust
him). Its just that I didn't want to ask on Saturday when I saw him last
(wanted some time to puzzle it over myself to see what I could come up
with). Unfortunately the next time I'll see him is *next* Saturday, and I've
already puzzled over it long enough (I came to mostly the same conclusion).

As always, thanks for your insight.

Just got back from the vet's office. His hips look reasonably good. (no
arthritis, which is good). He had one small spot where the femoral head
looked a little flattened, but they didn't think it was too severe.

They were a little surprised that he seemed to be in as much pain as he is
from this leg given the amount of movement (or rather lack of much movement)
they can feel in his knee (he was doing the 3 legged dog hop for them).
