Seizure?

In January of last year, when Khan (9 year old GSD/Malamute mix) was on
Zeniquin for UTI, he had an episode where his teeth chattered
uncontrollably.  Kind of like when you're too cold and your teeth are doing
their own thing.  Well, it happened again yesterday evening, and we don't
have any medication to pin it on this time around.

As we normally do on weekdays, we went to the dog park yesterday afternoon.
Khan was his usual self, running, wrestling and playing, and generally
having a good time.  I noticed, when he got into the car on our way back
that his teeth were clacking together, rather loudly, every time he opened
his mouth.  Once we got home, I pried open his mouth, and checked on his
teeth and inside the mouth to see if maybe something got stuck in there.
His jaw vibrated in my hands the whole time I had his mouth open.  He went
up to the water bowl to drink, but didn't, and I gave him a few kibble to
see if he could chew and swallow, which he did (although he was crunching
the food just fine, his teeth were chattering in between).  A little later,
he drank some water.  About an hour after it started, the teeth chattering
stopped, and he was back to his usual self.

The vet on call seemed to think that it might be some sort of seizure
disorder, although she didn't know of any that would manifest itself in just
this way.  For now, she said that we keep a journal so we can remember
exactly what happened, and see if this happens with greater frequency.  Also
suggested a neuro consult/MRI if this keeps happening or the episodes get
worse.

Any ideas on which particular haystack to start poking about in would be
most welcome.

Has your dog had blood work done recently?
Given the age of your dog, it might not hurt to get a senior profile to make
sure everything is ok.  This would be a conservative place to start before
you go to a specialist.

October.  He had his geriatric panel (all bloodwork, glaucoma check, BP
check) and physical back then.

.......and Khan is on what meds again?  Still on same level of thyroid meds
and Proin?  With Kahn's history I'd be looking at endocrine.....still.
Teeth chattering......could be a seizure I suppose, but from what?  Glucose
level?  If Kahn didn't have endocrine problems, you'd think he'd just
smelled a bitch in heat.......wonder if the high levels of androstenedione
have anything to do with it?

Don't know if you've seen this...just came out in DVM mag this January:

And here's a current post in a german shep forum you might want to track:

I'd think they'd almost have to recheck all the thyroid and hormone levels
first, wouldn't you?

Scroll down to comment, thought this might interest you.....people, not
dogs.

0.6 mg of Soloxine for hypothyroidism, 25 mg Proin, 2X a day, 40 mg lignans,
1X a day, 3 mg Melatonin, 2X a day, and 1000 mg fish oil, 2x a day.

No change there.  Except, we think that his low Thyroid might have been
caused by the Cushing's, and might not be an issue now that he's being
treated for it, but because our regular vet is on maternity leave, we
haven't tested it yet.

> With Kahn's history I'd be looking at endocrine.....still.

The vet did mention that we need to see if it could be a side effect of the
Proin.  It doesn't seem consistant with either hyperthyroidism or Addison's,
and she couldn't think off-hand about another endocrine problem that might
have caused it.  Might be worthwhile to repeat the Tennessee panel to see
what has happened to his Androstenedione level, now that we're treating the
Atypical Cushing's.

No idea right now.  The vet mentioned the possibility of a brain tumor.  As
with just about everything with him, this particular symptom doesn't really
fit anything either.

Unlikely.  We know all the dogs that were there yesterday, and everyone is
spayed/neutered.

I hadn't seen this one.  Thank you.

Damn.  Tick borne diseases.  No one had thought of it.  I'm reasonably
certain that he had a HW/Lyme test in October.  Not sure if he has had a
full tick panel.  Looks like a check on the Thyroid levels is in order too.
I'm wondering if we need to go with Jean Dodds instead of MSU.

It's certainly looking that way.

Interesting.  Makes it more imperative that we redo his UTenn panel.  I'll
email Dr. Oliver (UTenn endocrinologist) to see if he has any input on this.

......actually the teeth chattering made me think of Addison's........but
sometimes everything looks like Addisons to someone who'd had an Addisonian!
