krazy - 16 Jul 2008 15:18 GMT Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with an OTC tape worm dewormer that is sold at Pet Smart?? I got some to use for the strays that I feed.
I know someone is going to tell me to go to vet. I asked my vet and she will not give any without seeing the cat and I can not afford to take them all in even if I could catch them.
So please if anyone has ever used them could you please let me know if you ran into problems??

Get this. It works.

Checked above out but it says a prescription is needed and as stated above I would have to catch them all and take them to vet before she will give one!!

My advice is to find a vet who will sell you a pill. Shop around.
Sharon Too - 16 Jul 2008 21:52 GMT > This is nuts. My advice is to find a vet who will sell you a pill. > Shop around. Veterinarians, like doctors, are restricted by state law with regard to prescription medication. States require that a timely examination be on record and a valid doctor/patient/client relationship is established. They are audited. So if the vet needs to examine the patient, it's about good thorough veterinary medicine (making sure it *is* just tapeworm you're looking at and not a multitude of other issues - not to mention proper doseage) and not about making a buck. Losing a license due to prescribing medication outside regulated limits is not something to sneeze at.

Granby - 16 Jul 2008 22:57 GMT I know you can't get medication like this from a vet without a trip with the cat. When I have done this with a stray, and I have four times, I just buy the OTC stuff and hope it works. Sometimes HOPE is all you have. Thank you for trying to help the strays anyway.

Then there may be a reason for that, beyond just that the vet wants to make money. I don't know of anyone deworming stray cats. How do you know that one won't get all the medicine and others not get it? For feral cats, all you can usually expect to do is feed them and sometime provide them shelter if needed. With more resources we can trap and see they get to a vet and if they're lucky a good home. Beyond that it get very difficult, and you could wind up doing more harm than good.

Lucy - 17 Jul 2008 02:03 GMT Two things: My understanding is that the OTC dewormer at PetSmart doesn't work on the same kind of worms that the prescription stuff kills. And: You can get prescription pet meds without a prescription at Four Corners:
http://www.4cnrs-asthma-allergy.com/
They're located on Vanuatu in the South Pacific. I have had a cat with asthma who has used a prescription inhaler for years. All the U.S. pharmacies charged $260 for it. The Canadian pharmacies only charged $37, but they required a paper prescription, and my vet doesn't use paper prescriptions because they could "fall into the wrong hands!" Don't get me started on the paranoia in THAT statement. Anyway, my BIG asthma list suggested Vanuatu. Cat owners had been using it for years and they don't require a scrip. Now I know someone could give me a long, preachy lecture about "safety" and such crap, but you know, I trust Canadian pharmacies and overseas pharmacies much more than I do U.S. pharmacies. More and more of the "U.S." meds are now made and packaged in India anyhow. I'm planning to order some of my own meds from there.
Anyway, the bottom line: You can order from Four Corners without a scrip. Only drawback - it takes about four weeks.

Will check it out. Sounds like it is what I am looking for.

Deborah, DVM - 18 Jul 2008 13:10 GMT What worms are you looking to treat? Most OTC wormers only are effective against roundworms, not hooks or tapes. We use drontal for cats, it kills all 3, and while it is a veterinary product, it isn't technically a prescription product. You could probably find a vet to sell it to you, or find an online store that isn't for some odd reason requiring a script. If you aren't worried about tapeworms, just look for a product with pyrantel.

Not totally sure, but I think it is up here (at least that is what all the clients to the clinic are told, and what I've been told by everyone who works at the clinic)

Deborah, DVM - 29 Jul 2008 12:44 GMT The bottle itself, as well as the product insert, doesn't have the FDA warning label. As prescriptions are regulated on a federal level, I can't imagine there would be regional differences. Now, I'm sure there are a lot of clinics who treat it as a prescription product, but we recently had a big discussion on this at our clinic, and we looked at all of our dewormers to see which were prescription and not, and drontal feline was NOT (canine, however, IS -- go figure).
