Sorry for cross posting but I desperately need an answer here.
Recently a female cat which looked hardly more then a kitten herself showed
up where I feed my strays. She was pregnant at time but before I could
befriend her she disappeared and showed up couple days later slimmer and
nursing. I have no idea where kittens are. I have checked some of the
friendlier neighbor's garages that they go in and nothing. Anyway I have
since gotten her to warm up to me to the point where I can pick her up and
pet her.
The thing is that by the looks and feel of her belly I would swear she is PG
again but it has only been about 4 weeks since she had her babies. I would
hate for her to have more kittens but then again I would hate to rehome her
or take her in to be spayed with kittens out there depending on her. She is
spending more and more time around where I feed the strays.
Question is does anyone know how often cats can have kittens??
I know people will start on finding the other kittens and before they do let
me say I have done what I can. And as I mentioned in some other threads the
area is not one where I would want to be prowling around. They would just as
soon shoot, rob or beat you as not. It is getting so bad there that I am
about to stop feeding strays there because I feel it is not safe for an
elderly person (Which I am whether I want to admit it or not) to be along
there. I am seriously thinking about trapping the last few strays and taking
to shelter so they will not have to go cold turkey with no feeding. Before
someone starts on shelters about 3 months ago there was a decapitated cats
found and about 2 weeks after that one of the better nieghbors found a cat
that some cut most of it hair off so please do not start on shelters and they
are better of roaming free and fending for themselves!! Anyways can I get an
answer to the question aout how long it takes to get re-pregnant?
TIA

http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=1&cat=1362&articleid=922 has
some info but it does not answer that question directly.
I have heard but cannot yet document that a cat won't get pregnant again
while she's lactating. I'm looking for a source that can confirm or refute
that.

"It is not unusual for cats to come into heat about 4 weeks after kittens
are born. A few cats will have an estrus period, in which they may become
pregnant if bred, at about 7 to 10 days after kittens are born. Most cats
will actually have suppression of estrus during the period they are
producing milk for the kittens and then come into heat a couple of weeks
after the kittens are weaned. So it is possible for a cat to have kittens
within 2.5 to 3 months after their last litter of kittens is born, but it
is unusual."

I've seen plenty of cats around here show up pregnant while still nursing a
litter. While the textbooks say it's not common, I think it happens a lot
more commonly in feral cats (not so much breeding cats, i.e. pets). If she
looks pregnant, she probably is :-(.

I would not be surprised if she brings the kittens to you. I have had this
happen twice out here in the country. Once they are mobile, she will most
likely bring them from their hiding place to her food source. If you can,
try to socialize them by picking them up and holding/petting them. If they
are people friendly, they will have a much better chance of adoption.

Yes indeed. If Fred had known to do this wif me when I was a kitten, I'd
hsf had a much friendlier life and not been so scared uv hoomans an
effurryfing. You pick up da kitten and hold it till it purrrz in your arms
and then you know it's acceptted you and later offer hoomans tuu. You must
set aside enough time to hold da kitten and not put her or him down until
he or she is purrrin and comfortable. And da hooman doing da holdin has to
love da kittie an it helps to focus on dat while holdin it gently and
strokin it till it gets da message, which it will, 'cuz effen little
kittens are already pretty smart.
