Hi everyone --

Just thought you would like to know that the kitty I found with the tail injury
may be recovering from his incontinence.  I took him in for a consult with a
surgeon, about getting his tail removed, and the tech that did his exam said
that his anal sphincter is working - !  I think the problem is that since he
can't lift up his tail, he is just soiling himself because of that.  This
morning when I went to express urine from him, his bladder was pretty much
empty - I didn't find a pee clump in the litter box, but his blanket was wet, so
I suspect he's starting to be able to control his pee flow also.  He's scheduled
to have his tail amputated on Friday morning.  Hopefully that will improve the
whole excretory situation.  I'm a little bit concerned that he doesn't appear to
have produced much urine today, but he's been out and about on my screened
porch, so I might have missed it.  If he's dry tomorrow, I want to take him in
for a kidney function test to make sure he hasn't sustained kidney damage as
part of his injury, resulting in his kidneys shutting down.  Is this likely?  He
has been producing plenty of pee since I found him on Jan. 22nd -- does it make
sense that he would suddenly stop producing it now that he's on the mend?

I'll post again to let everyone know how he does with his tail surgery and
subsequent recovery.

Karen -- If you met him, you'd do the same thing.  He's a real charmer!  Which
makes it even more puzzling to me why his owners haven't claimed him.  I'll be
finding him a good home after I get him healthy, if they haven't appeared at
that point.  Need a cat?  -- M9

I've got three already, but if he's enough of a charmer for you to get him
healthy, you'll find someone.

Is there a chance that he'll recover control over his tail, too?

Betsey --  Sadly not -- I wish I could post the Xrays, because you can clearly
see about 1/2" of space between his pelvis and the first vertebrae of his tail.
Whatever happened to him, he got yanked pretty darn hard.  Both the ER vet and
the surgeon have said definitively that he'll never regain it, and it should
come off.  So... he'll be an honorary manx! -- M9

.......I have a dog with a mostly non-functional tail - well except when
she's hunting her ball - then she manages to get it up to almost half mast!
The vet said that it was consistent with injuries seen when the tail got
slammed in a door.  And since I had a sneaky cat who would occasionally
sneak  in unseen right behind me and almost did this myself once, it could
have just been an accident.  The bad thing about it is most people don't
know her tail doesn't work and just assume she's a sad whipped dog because
her tail just hangs there.
