Ear Wax

Do some dogs just naturally produce a huge amount of ear wax,
or would this be a symptom of some bigger problem?

I have a chihuahua that is about 11 years old and it seems like
she just has a tremendous amount of ear wax, especially if I
don't clean her ears every day.

Also, it there a veterinary procedure for cleaning excess wax
out of the ears? I was thinking that maybe the ears could be
rinsed (irrigated?) with warm water and completely cleaned of
wax perhaps while the dog is under sedation (perhaps at the
same time the teeth are cleaned).

Thanks in advance,

........Does your dog also scratch at her ears?  What does the wax look
like?  Has the vet ever checked for yeast or bacterial infection?

.....Yes, they can put them under sedation and flush the ears out.  Usually
this is done for an infection that just won't clear up with normal
treatment.

Yes, she does. If I don't clean them regularly, she wakes up during
the night shaking and scratching. The wax is dark brown and thick.

The vet has checked her. I can't remember what she found, but the
dog was put on antibiotics. That was about a year ago and we haven't
been back to the vet since then. I clean her ears with the solution the
vet sold me, but not as often as I should. :-(  My bad.

Maybe I'll have this done in combination with a dental exam, which she
can really use!
