Kazz my 4 year old German Shepherd dog started drinking a lot more water
about a week ago and also doing the toilet in the house (which he has never
done). I took him to my local vets yesterday for a urine and blood test,
urine was OK, so sign of diabetes. BUT the blood test has come back and
shown a high Calcium Level, which I have been told is a sign of Cancer or
Leukemia. The vet has said to come back in 1 weeks time to get another blood
test and check the calcium level again.
Has anyone got any experience of this or any advice on what I can do ?
Any replies to my email would be most appreciated.
TIA

Call your vet and tell him/her your concerns. Don't wait for the vets here
to get off work to answer your questions, though they are so good about
sharing their free time here.

.......worse how? Dog panting and pacing? If you feel your pup is
miserable, get him into the vet - even if it's an emergency vet. Something
like Addison's disease doesn't always show up in initial bloodwork, yet can
become a crisis situation.
....If you decide to wait for another blood test, make sure it's a fasting
blood draw - 12 hours without food. Best way to do this is to get the first
appt in the AM, then you can feed right after they take blood.
Keep us posted.

what was his phosphorus level? if that is low, there's really only two
things it could be- cancer or hyperthyroidism. if it's just the calcium,
there's other possibilities. or it could be a lab goof.

wait a week, recheck it, and try not to worry too much. was calcium really
the only value out of range?

Phosphorus was 1.8 mmol/l, I think the normal range is 0.9-1.6. So I guess
its a little bit high.
He has settled down a littl ebit but is being sick also. Seen the local vet
yesterday & today, and was given an anti-nausea and an antibiotic injection.
I will post a full set of blood results later today.
Thanks to everybody for your help.

Hi ,
I am not a vet but when animals drinks lots of water.
There is only two tings that come to mind.
It is very hard but try not to worry.
If it was me I would phone the vet ..telling them about the worry it is
causing you.
They are there to help you as well as the dog.

around you.
In the last few weeks.

What other blood tests were done? Were any of the other values abnormal
(I'm particularly curious about white blood cell count, phosphorous, and
total protein numbers here)?
I see in your other post you are worried that your dog is getting worse.
You should have him evaluated as soon as possible.

Hypercalcemia makes me suspicious of lymphosarcoma, anal gland carcinoma,
osteosarcoma, renal disease, and thyroid disease. Since his urine was ok,
that decreases the chance of kidney problems, but watch him very closely for
swollen lymph nodes, lameness, throat swelling, or any other unusual
behavior or appearance. Good luck!
