I have been reading a great deal lately about these topics in the NGs and
web sites; and finally decided that I am confused. So I would like to hear
your opinions.

Bookshelf stream08 Feb 2004 19:46 GMT4
I have built a 26''x10''x12''(h) tank to fit an empty space in my (very
robust) bookshelf. It is going to have an external filter (90 g/h)
with inflow and outflow placed on the opposite ends of the tank, so to
make a somewhat strong current. There will be two 11w fluorescent lights
black algae (probably Chantarsia) - how to remove it?08 Feb 2004 11:02 GMT2
There are an awful black algae in my 3 months old 112l tank (light
power is about 40W). Does anybody know why they appeares and what
should I do to remove them? My snails (ampularias) eats it, but algae
still regenerates. They grow mostly on Vallisnerias and Bacopas. I'm
Low Light Plants08 Feb 2004 10:54 GMT8
I just posted two pictures of my 75 and 29 gallon tanks in
"alt.binaries.aquaria".
Both have less than 2 watts per gallon lighting.  All of the plants
are also supposed to be comfortable in that range:

Help for a Newbie with plant problems...08 Feb 2004 05:31 GMT8
I've had a ten gallon now for about six months and about a month ago
put in live plants.  They looked beautiful at first, but now about half
of them seem to be dying- turning brown and rotting away.  Any ideas?

Is this ich?08 Feb 2004 05:03 GMT6
My blue gourami has one small white spot on it's back and a bit of what
looks like fluffy cotton on the tail fin. I have some Rid Ich on hand if
needed. I also have Fungus Clear if it's a fungus.
I have also noticed that the tetra in the same tank has a big belly

Hey All:
I've never had two gourami's in the same tank before, as I am fairly new
to the hobby, however I saw one that I couldn't resist and pick him up (He's
a Dwarf Gourami while the current inhabitant is a Opuline).
Lurking: Back in the Hobby....Need Advice08 Feb 2004 04:25 GMT1
Hi all, I've been lurking around this news group for a little time.  Thanks
for all the good posts, they have helped me tremendously.  I have just
returned to the hobby after being out of it for over 15 years.  Here's my
dilemma:
Balance between nutrients, light & CO2 08 Feb 2004 04:07 GMT10
I have read lots that stresses the importance of balancing nutients,
light and C02 in a planted aquarium, but little that tells me in simple
terms how.
My latest 55g aquarium is about a month old, is heavily planted and I
Am I cursed with pl*cos?08 Feb 2004 01:02 GMT17
Okay... so I had a pl*co in my 30G for almost a year before he died.. I
waited a few weeks, changed some water and got a new one.. he died after 5
days.. took him back to LFS, they tested my water (fine) and gave me another
one... who died... ::sigh:: No more pl*cos for that tank.
How to determine gallon capacity based on dimensions?07 Feb 2004 23:09 GMT4
Can anyone tell me what the formula is to determine how many gallons an
aquarium is based on the outside measurements?

PLEASE help with brown mold/fungus/algea stuff!!!07 Feb 2004 16:04 GMT1
I have a 10gal aquarium I use for a betta and 3 cory cats my wife
"rescued." The betta died some time back, but the little corys are
fine. It has an aquaclear 150 filter with two sponges, and I do about
a 15% water change per week, using Amquel. There are a couple of

When choosing the right light for a planted aquarium, what is more important
the Kevin or the watts reading? I bought a 2800K, 20W for my 30G tank...and
