is this a bad way to treat fish?14 Jul 2004 16:05 GMT6
this afternoon we visited the new branch of an aquatics shop with a good
reputation (the previous and before this only branch certainly had,
anyway) while we were at the garden centre. The pond fish all looked
healthy and well filtered etc, and the tropical tanks *looked* fine, ...

BAFFLED--ASSISTANCE REQUESTED14 Jul 2004 15:18 GMT4
I have a small freshwater tank, approx 12.0" x 11.5" x 7.5".  The
water temp is 27 degrees C.  Gravel bottom, 3 live plants in small
pots, and the filter is one where the water is sucked in, goes through
a charcoal bag and then waterfalls into the tank.
Barb ID?14 Jul 2004 00:27 GMT1
At the local LFS they have a barb which looks much like Barbus/Puntius
barilioides, bluebanded barb - ie small, slender, golden-colored with
bluish transverse bands.
However, in addition to the seven transverse blue bands, it also has a
fishless cycle question.14 Jul 2004 00:27 GMT8
okay, my pond has been cycling for a couple of weeks now, I used fishfood
and my old pond filter media and the vacuumings and some of the gravel from
one of my ugf tanks. Within a couple of days the ammonia was right up, it
has slowly returned to 0 with .8mg/l of nitrates. when do i ...

my freshwater moray eel ate my african cichlid!13 Jul 2004 18:15 GMT19
I have a 10 gal. freshwater tank. It was initially occupied with 12 feeder
minnows. After about 2 weeks, 8 have died and 4 survived. I put it a 2"
African cichlid, the aggressive type. The cichlid doesn't seem to be too
interested in the minnows and they lived together for about 2 ...

ammonia..13 Jul 2004 13:16 GMT6
Where in the UK is the best place to get ammonia for fishless cycle. I have
looked in major supermarkets down the cleaning products aisle, and no
product specifically states ammonia, although I expect most contain the
stuff. Although nearly all products contain added bleach (no-no) ...
UGFs and maintenance13 Jul 2004 13:15 GMT4
I have a 30 gallon tank, which I want to have well planted.  I am
wondering which will require less vacuuming of the substrate, with or
without a UGF?
I have seen completely contradictory opinions on the topic, so I am a bit

removing silicone?11 Jul 2004 19:55 GMT8
A friend has just acquired an aquarium which has some kind of backing
siliconed to the back wall - apparently it's black, looks a bit like
petrified wood and has "juwel" on the back. I haven't seen it myself,
but he says he hates it (from his description it's pretty nasty, but
reality check: moving cross country11 Jul 2004 19:19 GMT6
My boyfriend and I are moving from New York to California at the end of
this month. We are very attached to our fish, but I'm wondering now if
it's easier to give them up and know they'll have a chance at a good
life with new owners, or to be selfish and try to bring them with us ...
