Well... With the average outside temperature dropping significantly below 60 deg F it was time to move Hans, my tub garden red/white comet inside. (We lost Frans (white/red) to a raccoon several weeks ago.)

Kept fish for years but this one has me stumped. 65 gallon with 10-15 additional gallons in a sump. Pump in the sump sends water through a canister filter. Ammonia and Nitrites show 0 (new test kit too). Two large Oranda's and two or three large java ferns in the tank. Bare bottom.

I had cause to return a fish to the petshop today, where my rather wonderful salesman informed me that the little bug on the tail was in fact and Argulus. He removed it for me, and everything is now looking much more positive!

Theres a guys on freshwater.misc who claims his fish live happily and stress free with him doing 30% water changes every YEAR (with evaporation top ups) - YIKES!! He says he disagrees with me 110% for suggesting goldies need water changed every week.

My goldfish is sitting at the bottom of my tank. he gets up and moves and then goes back down again! I put in a power head yesterday and since then he has been like that! my undergravel filter had broken down about a month ago because of the air pump could that have any connection ...

After a vigorous mating session my female goldfish left 4 eggs on the glass of the tank 1 hatched on the weekend well 3am sunday morning, I tried to catch it but I couldnt catch it, since seeing it the first time I havent been able to see it again. I suspect it may have been eaten.

Yikes! I haven't seen this before. My 7" butterfly panda has developed a hole in her left side gill cover. The area surrounding it is red. She has been placed in a 10 gal. aerated hospital tank with fresh water and 1 tsp. of salt per gal.

I saw a nice 5Kg container of Sodium Bicarbonate at the pool store yesterday. I'm wondering if I can safely use pool store bought products like this in my fish tank.

These posts always recommend 1 teaspoon/5gal, but my DOC Wellfish Salt carton recommends 1 tablespoon/5gal as a general tonic. 1 teaspon of salt per 5gal works out to what % solution? Also, how do i measure Salinity in freshwater tanks (0.01-0.5%) range?
