Setting Up Sand Bed29 Oct 2003 23:10 GMT2
Hello Again,
I have a few questions on setting up a deep sand bed. I have read about the
sand cloud storm and was wondering if this can cause wear on the pump
impeller? Shoud I use something besides my new Iwaki untill the sand
What's happening to my Anemone29 Oct 2003 19:29 GMT35
Hello Gang,
I have another Anemone question.  About 4 days ago my BTA went to the back
of the tank and folded in half.  He hasn't relocated since he got there but
has stretched to the top of the rocks a couple of times.  When he stretches
Calcium Levels29 Oct 2003 19:08 GMT17
I've been out of the hobby for a while and am presently setting a 400 liter
tank (around 110 US Gal) up using RO Water, Instant Ocean marine salt and
coral sand. The tank's been settling in for around a week. The SG is sitting
at 1.022, PH at around 8.2, 0ppm Ammonia, Nitrite, ...
getting started: which magazine is recommended?29 Oct 2003 10:57 GMT3
Hi;
Im planning in getting started in the hobby.  Already started reading
a couple of books before buying anything.
Which magazine should I subscribe to as a newbie?
Surprising, but true29 Oct 2003 09:25 GMT24
Perhaps I'm wrong and there's another explanation, but I've noticed all
my corals respond to time of day rather the tank lights.  I thought it
might have been a learned reaction, that they could actually anticipate
the lights going off, but they have ignored the changes I made ...
mark question29 Oct 2003 08:17 GMT3
Mark and all of the other experts out there, here is a question:
I setup my new 46G tank with LS (live sand 55lbs), live rock 45lbs (another
25lbs on the way) two weeks ago to the day.  Today I checked the ammonia
levels of the tank and they are at 0ppm.  Unfortunately I have not ...
Lighting question29 Oct 2003 06:19 GMT4
How important is it, in a fish only saltwater tank, to turn the lights on
everyday?  If important, how long do you suggest having them on everyday?
Right now we have them on about 12-13 hours per day...wasn't sure if that
was overkill, too much, indifferent?  Just curious since when ...
derbesia algae outbreak28 Oct 2003 23:57 GMT18
Hi folks;
I've had my marine tank set up for about six months.  55gal, Remora HOB
skimmer, 67 lbs live rock, 260w lighting (50/50 blue actinic/10000K), two
MaxiJet 1200 powerheads, two inch aragonite reef sand layer.  One sailfin
handheld pH meter to replace PinPoint?28 Oct 2003 18:25 GMT8
Hello;
Can anyone recommend a handheld pH meter that can replace my PinPoint pH
meter, which I'd like to move to another tank?  Specifically I'd like the
handheld to be as accurate and reliable as the PinPoint.  Thanks in advance.
Reef Tank - Substrate or Not???28 Oct 2003 17:59 GMT9
I'm in the process of setting up my first reef aquarium and can't decide
whether to use a substrate or not. I'm planning a 500 litre tank to mature
with 20kgs of live rock, trickle filter/sump system, etc.
My supplier recommends a coral sand substrate, however I've read that using
The "New" reef philosophy.28 Oct 2003 07:24 GMT20
Read an interesting article from a link posted here about what the
author felt was the main problem with reef aquaria-namely that people
try to keep lifeforms from different systems together in one tank. His
point is that it is impossible to properly keep corals, fish, etc. that
Is it safe to use water polishing filter on a reef tank?27 Oct 2003 20:38 GMT9
I have setup a reef tank two months ago and I am very new to salt
water tanks. I have kept fresh water tanks and fish for over 15 years.
My question is, is it safe to use a water polishing filter like System
1 Pressure Filter or some sort of other diotom filter in a reef tank?
Question from newbie!27 Oct 2003 19:43 GMT18
We have a 70 gallon tank that has been set up as a freshwater tank for the
past 6 years.  A week ago yesterday we changed it over to a saltwater tank,
so we are very new at this.  We have added 4 damsels to the tank 5 days ago
to help cycle it through, but our Ammonia and Nitrates ...
Info on your resident troll.27 Oct 2003 17:13 GMT7
Hello all.  Your resident troll posted these to alt.flame.  Apparently it needs
help (in more ways than one) and went begging for it to a.f.  Do note that it
encouraged outside parties to spam those listed.  The addys are forged
presumably and the posts are not archived.  Interested ...
Bristle Worms27 Oct 2003 13:37 GMT2
I see conflicting thoughts in regard to bristle worms so I figured that I would
get some more opinions here. I found at least (2) bristle worms in my tank when
I was peeking in on it with a flashlight last night. They are both about 3
inches long. The tank is mainly fish but does ...
