would 384W of PC lighting be enough?31 May 2004 11:49 GMT1
Would 384W of Power Compact lighting (4 X 96W) be enough for nearly "4wpg"
in a 77 gallon tank? (48"x24"x16"). We have about 2 feet of height that this
light has to penetrate strongly. I'm pricing out some retrofit kits that go
from 220watts (4X55) to 440watts (8X55W). I realize ...
Several DIY Yeast CO2 System questions.30 May 2004 23:00 GMT8
For any who may be familiar with the 2-liter-soda-bottle method of CO2
production...  using baking soda as a buffering/stabilizing
compound... Could someone tell me what the optimum mix of water,
yeast, and baking soda would be using this method?  (in case it makes

Carbon Filters in planted tanks30 May 2004 06:40 GMT4
I have just purchased a Jewul aquarium, which comes with a carbon
filter pad as standard. I have read elsewhere that carbon filters
might remove any plnat food that I put in the tank. Is this the case?
If so, any advice on what to do in terms of replacement filter media
26W compact fluorescent over a 10g?28 May 2004 15:26 GMT1
Hey folks,
I'm planning on retrofitting my old goldfish tank with an AH Supply
2x13W CF kit. Will this be enough to grow light-hungry plants such as
glossostigma or will I have to spring for a 1x36W or even a 2x36W kit?

While I admit that Flourite is attractive on it's own, I would have to
say that my method has mostly due with the different nutrient
complexes provided by the Onyx as opposed to just Flourite...  it's
the "shotgun" approach to nourishing plants.... two different

I have a 20gal planted tank at work and something strange (to me) happened
this week.  Some tank info first;

controlling algae26 May 2004 16:49 GMT1
Just wanted to post a suggestion on controlling algae that worked for me. It
only took me 2 years to figure it out, up to this point I have tried
everything and it did not work. The solution was very simple. I just got a
plastic container, filled it with distilled water, added all ...

I was referred to this discussion for an answer to my question.  I have
a planted 55gal tank with Cabomba, Java Fern, Rotalla Macrandra,

Hi folks;
I'm looking for recommendations for a low-light, rooted foreground plant.
I've got about 1.5" of flourite there.  Thanks!
upgrading to 4wpg, how often for trace nutrient fertilzation?25 May 2004 19:13 GMT10
I'm upgrading from 2.7wpg to 4wpg in the next few days. I want my ludwigias
and rotalas redder and ambulia more bushy...plus I plan on getting some nice
micro sword.
Here are the issues (prefferably if Tom Barr can respond to these :) ):
Phosphate25 May 2004 19:06 GMT12
The tap water at my work place has a pH of 7.8.  So far when I've done water
changes in my planted tank at work, I've been lowering the pH (to ~6.8)
using a commercial kit which uses sodium biphosphate.  Recently I've noticed
that my phosphate level is >2ppm.  Is there another way ...
Onyx Gravel, Flourite, & Crushed Lava Rock?25 May 2004 11:37 GMT1
Hello people, this is my first time posting in this group...
I work at a local pet shop, helping to manage the fish room,  One of
my coworkers recently gave me a 50 gallon D.A.S. tank, which I plan on
planting heavily, installing a CO2 system... the whole nine yards.
