| Substrate heater cables and Onyx Sand | 31 Oct 2005 20:38 GMT | 5 |
I'm thinking of setting up a tank with a Seachem Onyx Sand substrate and a heater cable. Reading about heater cables, I've seen it suggested that it is best to cover the cable with a fine sand which distributes the heat evenly, then cover this with the rooting substrate. Is this ...

| changed light settings, can anyone suggest fert dosage? | 30 Oct 2005 20:58 GMT | 1 |
I just changed my wpg from 4 to 2.67...at 4 I realized it was too unstable and hard to keep a proper balance of nutrients with the extreme amount of light. I was dosing, as Tom Barr suggested, 1 grain of KH2PO4 and 1/8th teaspoon of KNO3 every other day and 3ml of traces on the ...

| Free plants (local pickup only) | 29 Oct 2005 22:59 GMT | 1 |
I've got a bunch of plants free to the first person who can come by and get them. I pulled them from the tank yesterday, so they don't have long to live! There is a very large bunch of African Fern, and lots of Java Fern,

It's been a while! I moved to Arizona with my wife, and subsisted for a whole year with one tank. ONE TANK! Sadly, that state of affairs is a-changing ;) I just finished setting up a

| My plants aren't doing so hot... | 26 Oct 2005 01:07 GMT | 6 |
Only the hygrophila is showing symptoms so far--new growth is brown. They are in an aquarium without fish at the moment, two relatively small plants (approx 8" tall). They are still in the rock-wool packing but will be moved to a flourite & vermiculite substrate within the next

| Help - Any Experience or Words on These Products? | 25 Oct 2005 01:14 GMT | 4 |
Has anyone tried the Carbo-Plus System? It supposedly produces CO2 by electrolysis, and goes for about $120. Has anyone tried the ETH in-line heater? Has anyone tried the Eheim wet/dry canister filter?

| Can't get rid of fuzzy algae, hornwort being choked | 22 Oct 2005 18:42 GMT | 3 |
Several months ago I somehow introduced some sort of fuzzy algae into my tank, and since then I have been unable to grow hornwort. The fuzzy stuff grows on the hornwort and basically overgrows them so I have this ugly fuzzy mass. If I reduce the light too much, the hornwort dies. ...

I am calling all experts out there to help me with feeding my plants. I have to admit that my knowledge in this area is very limited, but I've learned a lot since I started reading about it. Let me give you my tank stuff

| What's your maintenance schedule? | 15 Oct 2005 02:44 GMT | 12 |
I've read about people spending half an hour a week (or less) maintaining their planted tanks. I simply don't frickin believe it! Either they live in a perfect world or they're doing an awful lot of daily maintenance that's not being included in the weekly total.

| Advice on semi-planted aquarium? | 14 Oct 2005 22:53 GMT | 1 |
I'm making planters out of cross-stich sheets and nylon thread, then when I have the right shape using aquarium silicone to cover them in either aquarium gravel or river rocks (some of each.) The substrate in the planters is going to be laterite mixed with

| moving a 5 gallon aquarium | 11 Oct 2005 15:37 GMT | 5 |
I have a 5 gallon planted aquarium, and I will be moving in a few months locally. I have read that you should completly empty the tank, but I was wondering if I could leave the substrate alone because it's a small

| profoundly messed up aquarium | 11 Oct 2005 15:21 GMT | 4 |
I'm cleaning up a 120 g. aquarium with some severe problems: the tank belongs to an older man who has health problems and severely neglected it for what I would guess is close to a year. The setup is: planted 120 with Eheim 2228 - the filter was pretty

| Cloudy water question | 04 Oct 2005 04:21 GMT | 3 |
I have a 75 gallon planted tank and it is cycling. I have several pieces of bogwood in the tank and they do cause a yellow tinge to the water. I have also developed cloudy water in the tank and I can't tell if it is an algae bloom due to cycling or I may feed too much and it

| Flowering Sword | 03 Oct 2005 21:28 GMT | 2 |
I was wondering if anyone has had experience with their Amazon Sword sending up flower spikes? I started using PMDD about a month ago and since then my tank has taken off... I am dosing at 1ml a day, which keeps my Fe at .4ppm which appears to be right for my tank, it's great ...
