Co2 Day Two:  Three fish crash and burn!28 Feb 2006 12:22 GMT6
Okay, so I got my CO2 equipment "working," and had it set to release
about 50 - 60 bubbles per minute on a ten hour cycle timed with the
compact fluorescents.
Yesterday went fine.  Today, around 6:00 pm  (8 hours into the timed
Big plants?28 Feb 2006 11:41 GMT14
Which plants grow big (bushy), but not too tall? I'm going to have to redo
my plant tank soon, as my Sword is getting way to tall for the tank. I'm
looking for something I can prune back, but that doesn't require too much
maintenance.
Clown Loaches v.s. Water Sprite.28 Feb 2006 00:07 GMT11
Probably nothing to worry about...
Yesterday I transferred some Water Sprite from my Q-Tank-turned-planted tank
to my main tank.
The Loaches seem to find it quite tasty. Not bad for them? They surely get
moving plants around25 Feb 2006 20:30 GMT4
I'm thinking about moving one of my well-established amazon sword plant
few inches from its current position.. (tank is currently
free-standing, but i'm moving it to be against a wall, so I'm thinkng
about moving the taller plants towards the back of the tank)
Osram/Sylvania fluorescent tubes25 Feb 2006 13:47 GMT1
I've just found a source of these things "I can get anything".
I'd like to hear if there are any tubs people can't find or
can't find easily, especially CF biax and euro-only ones.
What do you guys in Europe use?
algae growth and plant density25 Feb 2006 00:10 GMT1
I was wondering if increasing the amount of plants on my tank will cut down
on algae growth. If I keep everything else
constant, light hours, CO2, etc...?
I have this persistant hair algae problem that I'm keeping under control
Eco-Complete Review?  (cross Post fm rec.freswater.misc)22 Feb 2006 16:10 GMT3
I'm setting up a new 90 gal discus/planted tank and thought I'd give it
a try rather then the Flourite Red that I have in the other tank.   (I've
had no problems with the Flourite, just thought I'd try something else.)

Why does laterite fizz when placed in water?21 Feb 2006 14:38 GMT1
When I place laterite in plain tap water (alkaline) it's produces very tiny
bubbles and fizzes for a few moments and keeps releasing tiny bubbles for at
least a minute.
Does anyone know what this gas is?
algae concerns going from 130W to 260W?20 Feb 2006 14:20 GMT12
Hau kolas..
Question for the group.. I have heard from various sources that it may be advantageous to control algae to interrupt the lighting cycle during the day..say an hour "pause"..the theory being that plants can "react" quicker than algae can to interrupted lighting (?). ...
Potassium Sulfate18 Feb 2006 15:50 GMT1
I decided to add some to a tank, figured out what I thought would be
an appropriate amount.  For about 144 liters of water I thought 0.6
grams would be right, a chunk I picked up weighed 0.5, so I went with
that.
How to Start CO2 injection?17 Feb 2006 21:47 GMT4
I have a 75 gallon tank with about fifteen rainbow fish.  I've ordered
CO2 equipment which should arrive this week.
What's the best way to start this up?  Do I just run it for brief
periods of time at first, like an hour a day, and gradually build it
My tank chemistry readings...how to interpret15 Feb 2006 23:10 GMT10
I have used those Doc Wellfish water chemistry test strips a few
times...while I find them somewhat hard to use (some of the color
gradations are too slight for MY eye to distinguish between...), I
seem to consistently come up with the following readings:
SmartPaq Eclipse lighting retrofit15 Feb 2006 21:22 GMT1
Has anybody used these compact flourescent retrofit kits in their
Eclipse hood? I have an Eclipse 1 twin lamp, and the light fixture is
shot. My original plan to give up on the 10 gallon tank and just buy a
bigger tank, hood, stand, filter, etc. for some reason seems to exceed

Yellow tips on Amazon swords?15 Feb 2006 02:39 GMT2
I just upgraded my 75 gallon tank with a 110 watt compact fluorescent
and a 40 regular tube light.  I wanted to take another shot at growing
plants...recently all I've had in there were java ferns which are no
brainers.
