Are avocados bad?30 Sep 2003 22:46 GMT25
One of our boys, Turing, has been to the vet's recently.  He started to lose
his balance and lost a LOT of weight suddenly.  We took him to the vet's
and, as our usual vet was on holiday, we saw another vet.  She said that a
little extra of what he likes (especially things like nuts ...

Room is starting to smell of rat wee29 Sep 2003 20:58 GMT11
I've cleaned the full cage (on Wednesday) since getting them (last
Saturday) and do spot cleaning daily and from handling the rats I've
determined it's they who are smelling my room out with their wee
stained coats. Little buggers - my mother has started to verbally note

Anyone else notice this?
Turn the light on and blam, they groom themselves and mope about more
slowly. (I'm still worried they may have mites, they are still
nibbling their skin or scratching with their legs and then
Rat eye problem?29 Sep 2003 13:14 GMT3
Hello.  I was just wondering if anyone has ever heard of any problems that might cause one of a rat's eyes to look larger than the other.  I noticed my sweet Abby looked a bit different but couldn't figure it out.  I've now noticed that one eye is larger than the other.  It just ...
Blue Rats29 Sep 2003 11:53 GMT2
Does anyone know anything about the strain of Blue Rats which are prone to a
type of Haemophillia?
I'm not sure if it's true haemophillia, but these rats have a tendency to
bleed to death from otherwise minor wounds, along with respiratory illness
RIP POPPY29 Sep 2003 06:50 GMT16
Well we've had a bit of a week with one of our females, who had been poorly
for a few weeks. "Poppy" started with what looked like some sort of
irritation arounds the eye a little bit of watering.
We noticed her teeth needed clipping having grown pretty dramatically whilst
Black moving dots on their skin29 Sep 2003 04:09 GMT11
I knew it. I fuckin' knew it... I just had a close-up of Timmy and he
has black moving dots on his coat. :o(
Damnit... I assume they've had these ever since I got them as they've
seemed to me to be over scratching, nibbling themselves etc right from
He's under the bed and won't come out :o(28 Sep 2003 20:30 GMT4
Skye made a jump for it as I was putting him back in the cage and he
dashed under my bed. I stayed up til 4am trying to coax him out with a
few swift attempts at trying to grab him...... it's not working.
He's been under there since 9:30pm last night and he seems terrified.
possible wild mice/rats in house- should I wait?28 Sep 2003 09:28 GMT3
I've wanted to get some rats for a few years now after I met the rats
my brothers had.  I've decided I'd like to buy them now but there may
be a problem...
I live in a shared house & before I lived there they had some
Need a rat rescue in Washington state27 Sep 2003 17:08 GMT14
Hi, I need a rat rescue in Washington state that can accomodate sick rats. I
have 4 subadult male blue rats (two are hooded), and they all have a
respiratory problem (sniffling and sneezing, still active and playful). I am
60 miles north of Seattle, WA and will drive a reasonable ...

Meds and vets26 Sep 2003 23:35 GMT6
I brought in my little guy Frisson to the vet because he has raspy
breathing. Unfortunately, it's a myco flare up. I was very happy to hear her
say that vets are now told that only a combination of drugs will work on the
actual myco. In the end, I decided to just try the zithromax ...

I have been thinking of giving my 2 boy ratties some chicken bones.
Is this really a good idea?

My rat is acting weird!  Help please.25 Sep 2003 21:39 GMT13
I've never had a problem with him until yesterday.  He has been sitting on
different stoops in the cage and hanging his head down.  He's slow and
breathing heavy and he keeps opening and closing his mouth really wide.  He
eats and drinks still, but he's acting weird.  His fur is ...
